First Reformed Community: Garden Outreach Coordinator

First Reformed Community Garden Outreach Coordinator Job Description

Background:

First Reformed United Church of Christ in Lexington, NC has received a grant from The Conservation Fund’s Resourceful Communities Program’s “Creating New Economies Fund.” The purpose of the grant is to assist First Reformed UCC in transitioning its Community Garden from an annual vegetable production garden to a more sustainable “edible landscape” with fruit trees, culinary herbs and pollinator gardens. Grant funds will be used to buy plants/trees, repair irrigation and composting systems and hire a part time garden outreach coordinator.

Hours available

10 hours per week, July – October 2025, total of 160 hours

Hourly rate

$15 - $ 20 depending on experience.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Work with First Reformed UCC garden liaison to develop and implement youth educational programming and intergenerational garden skills trainings, including at least one event per month with the “Anything for Our Youth” group and two in-garden workshops with Davidson County Cooperative Extension Service.

  2. Coordinate garden workers in rehabilitating and preparing garden beds for tree planting and vegetable production including mulching, composting, weeding and watering, planting and harvesting.

  3. Develop and produce educational signage and promotional materials for garden events and workshops.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Gardening experience.

  • Engagement in the local food community (local food networks, farmer markets, farmland preservation, sustainable development, local food production).

  • Graphic design production skills to make signage, flyers, fact sheets and promotional materials.

  • Ability to work with diverse individuals.

ABOUT DAVIDSON COUNTY LOCAL FOOD NETWORK

🍂 Fall Local Food Systems Apprentice Opportunity (Sept–Nov)
The Davidson County Local Food Network is hiring one part-time apprentice to support our fall season of farmers markets, food hub operations, and community events. If you’re passionate about sustainable agriculture, food access, and local food systems, this 6-week paid position could be a great fit!

🌱 Spring Local Food Systems Apprentice Opportunity (March–May)
We’re also looking ahead to fill our spring apprentice position, beginning in March. This part-time, 6-week paid opportunity involves hands-on support of farmers markets, our food hub, and local food-focused community initiatives.

🕒 15 hours/week | 💰 $15/hour
📍 In-person & remote hybrid | 🚗 Must have reliable transportation

Roles & Responsibilities

Ideal Candidate

We’re looking for individuals who are:

  • Eager to learn and grow within the local food system.

  • Comfortable working both independently and with a team in a hybrid setting.

  • Interested in a potential long-term role as the organization expands.

Community Event Support

  • Assist DCLFN at community events and farmers markets:

    • Help prepare, set up, and pack up for events.

    • Assist with cleanup afterward.

Farmers Market Support

  • Help vendors unload, set up, and break down booths.

  • Capture photos and video footage of market activities.

  • Support community programs like:

    • Kids’ activities

    • Cooking demos

    • General on-site assistance

Food Hub Support

  • Help pack food access program boxes with:

    • Fresh produce

    • Frozen meats

    • Eggs, dairy, and baked goods

  • Assist with producer drop-offs:

    • Greet producers

    • Unload vans

    • Load items into coolers

  • Organize products by customer order (retail, access, wholesale).

  • Support food hub managers with deliveries.

Competencies & Requirements

  • Able to stand for extended periods.

  • Comfortable lifting up to 50 lbs.

  • Reliable transportation and access to a laptop or computer.

  • Strong communication and writing skills.

  • Tech-savvy and familiar with Zoom or Google Meet.

  • Comfortable working with people of diverse backgrounds.
