Grow Your Gardening Knowledge with the 2026 Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program

If you have a passion for gardening and enjoy helping others, the 2026 Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program in Davidson County could be the perfect opportunity to grow your skills while making a difference in your community.

Hosted by N.C. Cooperative Extension, the program provides hands-on, science-based training in sustainable gardening, lawn care, landscaping, plant health, and more. No previous horticulture experience is required—just an eagerness to learn and a willingness to volunteer.

The journey begins with one of two required information sessions at the Davidson County Agriculture Center in Lexington:

  • Tuesday, July 21 from 10:00–11:00 a.m.

  • Thursday, July 23 from 10:00–11:00 a.m.

After attending an information session, prospective volunteers can apply to the program and participate in a series of Extension Gardener classes covering topics such as vegetable gardening, healthy lawns, home fruits, ornamentals, soils, plant nutrition, and integrated pest management. These educational classes are open to the public, making them a great resource even for those who do not plan to become Master Gardener volunteers.

Participants accepted into the program will complete core volunteer training in the fall, followed by a 40-hour internship working alongside N.C. Cooperative Extension staff. Volunteer opportunities include assisting with plant clinics, diagnosing common garden issues, maintaining demonstration gardens, teaching educational programs, and supporting youth gardening initiatives throughout the community.

To remain active in the program, volunteers complete annual service hours and continuing education, ensuring they stay current on best practices while continuing to serve Davidson County.

Whether you're an experienced home gardener or just beginning your gardening journey, the Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program offers a rewarding way to expand your knowledge, connect with fellow plant enthusiasts, and give back through education and community service.
