First Reformed Community Garden Outreach Coordinator Job Description

Background:

First Reformed United Church of Christ in Lexington, NC has received a grant from The Conservation Fund’s Resourceful Communities Program’s “Creating New Economies Fund.” The purpose of the grant is to assist First Reformed UCC in transitioning its Community Garden from an annual vegetable production garden to a more sustainable “edible landscape” with fruit trees, culinary herbs and pollinator gardens. Grant funds will be used to buy plants/trees, repair irrigation and composting systems and hire a part time garden outreach coordinator.

Hours available

10 hours per week, July – October 2025, total of 160 hours

Hourly rate

$15 - $ 20 depending on experience.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Work with First Reformed UCC garden liaison to develop and implement youth educational programming and intergenerational garden skills trainings, including at least one event per month with the “Anything for Our Youth” group and two in-garden workshops with Davidson County Cooperative Extension Service.

  2. Coordinate garden workers in rehabilitating and preparing garden beds for tree planting and vegetable production including mulching, composting, weeding and watering, planting and harvesting.

  3. Develop and produce educational signage and promotional materials for garden events and workshops.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Gardening experience.

  • Engagement in the local food community (local food networks, farmer markets, farmland preservation, sustainable development, local food production).

  • Graphic design production skills to make signage, flyers, fact sheets and promotional materials.

  • Ability to work with diverse individuals.
