Meet Janice and Michael Fine, the dynamic duo behind Seven Sisters Farm, representing the next generation of young, energetic, and innovative farmers. Janice, who grew up immersed in agriculture in Maryland, hails from a family managing 300-acre fields focused on select vegetables. However, Seven Sisters Farm showcases a different approach—a smaller market produce farm initially spanning just 2 acres. Michael and Janice quickly realized that the farming strategies Janice grew up with were not suitable for their smaller acreage, compelling them to adapt and pivot their approach.
Recognizing the need for diversified crop options to ensure year-round cash flow, they embraced a market garden style farm ideal for smaller acreage. Their planting schedule is meticulously designed to grow produce for direct sales to consumers through farmers markets and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs, rather than relying heavily on wholesale markets. Through their dedication and hard work, they have expanded Seven Sisters Farm from 2 acres to an impressive 9 acres.
Notably, Seven Sisters Farm was among the first farms to participate in the inaugural Davidson County Farm Tour in 2018. Since then, Michael and Janice Fine have significantly expanded their operation. They actively mentor new farmers and are frequently selected as a model farm for visits by aspiring farmers enrolled in the NC Farm School program. Their expertise is widely recognized, and they lead workshops and provide consulting services to other farms in the region.
Their farm serves as an exemplary model of season extension farming, cultivating diverse crops throughout the year. Additionally, its well-planned layout showcases effective land management and harvest strategies. Seven Sisters Farm offers an extensive selection of seasonal vegetables, herbs, vegetable plants, and flowers. They possess a strong commitment to selling their products within the local community and contributing to its nourishment. The farm also serves as a venue for workshops, actively contributing to the advancement and growth of the local agriculture trade.
