Direct Descendant Rabbitry and Apiary

Direct Descendant Rabbitry and Apiary (DDRA) is a unique micro urban farm owned by Charity Smith, an Air Force veteran with a deep-rooted passion for agriculture. Hailing from Bladenboro, NC, Charity formed her interest in agriculture under the influence of her grandfather and other family members.

Direct Descendant Rabbitry and Apiary pays homage to her late father, who cherished rabbits and all things sweet. Charity's farm is situated in the close-knit Arcadia community, surrounded by friends and neighbors.

As a first-generation farmer, Charity specializes in raising Californian, New Zealand White, and TAMUK rabbits primarily for meat production. These rabbits are not only incredibly robust and attractive, but their captivating presence often captivates passersby. However, please note that for safety reasons, visitors are not permitted to pet the rabbits.

Direct Descendant has been recognized for its innovation, having received grants from the Farmer Veteran Coalition Fellowship Fund and the NC AgVentures Grant Program. Moreover, the farm boasts the distinction of being the sole permitted rabbit manure compost facility in North Carolina, accredited by the NC Department of Environmental Quality. Charity's dedication has earned her the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified Biobased Product Label for BunnyBioGro™, making her composted rabbit manure the exclusive product of its kind in the United States. Rabbit manure is renowned for its effectiveness as a fertilizer, owing to its rich composition of essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, vital for optimal plant health.

Charity's farm provides a delightful opportunity for a short visit, offering enlightening tours that provide insight into her practices of running a small urban micro farm, including rabbit care, self-sustainability, and cultivating homegrown produce. Charity's expertise also extends to vermiculture and soil improvement techniques through worm composting. Her focus on practical self-sustainability methods aims to assist individuals in establishing thriving homesteads within urban settings. DDRA includes a small apiary with three varieties of honey bees, emphasizing sustainable beekeeping practices.

Rabbits hold a special place in the hearts of nearly everyone, evoking childhood memories and fond recollections. Charity warmly invites guests to share their own rabbit stories, as she delights in exchanging experiences and weaving her own narratives with visitors.

SandyCreek Farm

SandyCreek Farms is a local favorite, best known for its summer U-pick and We-pick blueberries and blackberries. But tucked beneath the canopy lies a hidden gem—a serene shiitake mushroom log forest. If you visit in the spring, you just might catch the mushrooms blooming from their hardwood logs.

The farm also features a thriving greenhouse, offering a colorful variety of annuals and perennials that add life to any garden.

Year-round, the SandyCreek Farm Store is stocked with seasonal delights, including small-batch jams, jellies, preserves, and sauces made from the farm’s own blueberries, blackberries, figs, mushrooms, and Muscadine grapes. You'll also find greenhouse-grown plants, select garden supplies, and a curated selection of local and regional favorites—like goat cheese from Holly Grove Farms, Ashe County cheeses and country butter, and handcrafted crackers from The Accidental Baker.

Shady Acres Farm

Tucked away in a surprisingly residential area of Thomasville, NC, Shady Acres Farm is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Surrounded by “shady” trees, this unassuming house belies the vibrant 5 acre fiber farm wonderland that lies beyond its front facade. Founded by Laura and Tommy Thomes, Shady Acres Farm is part farm, part creative outdoor “studio” for creativity and sustainable living.

Laura and Tommy's Journey Laura Thomes, a former hairdresser discovered knitting in her late twenties, which quickly turned into a passion with dreams of a farm where animals could be raised to produce the very fiber she worked with. When fate led her to Tommy, a craftsmen himself, together they transformed his land into Shady Acres Farm. With Laura's knack for spinning yarn from the soft fiber of their angora rabbits and angora goats, and Tommy's skill in woodworking and carpentry, they built their homestead.

At Shady Acres Farm, Laura and Tommy take pride in showing visitors the ins and outs of their operations. From introducing their adorable and award-winning Angora rabbits and the art of yarn-making to sharing the stories behind their hand-built structures and pastures, everything you see here reflects their hands-on approach to farming. As you stroll through the farm, you'll meet our free-ranging poultry and goats, each with their own unique personalities and lessons learned since they first brought them home. Crossings Farm

Today, the Crossings family is made up of many hands: Ben and Jennifer, Mackenzie, Keaton and Salem all live and work the farm daily. Raised on the family homeplace, all play an integral parts in the day to day operations of Crossings. Seen not only feeding, watering, processing, you will can find them selling at the Lexington and Thomasville Farmers Market. We also have several friends and family who come by to help out.

Crossings Farm thrives under the stewardship of Ben and Jennifer Rosecrans, alongside their children and several local youth who form the Crossings Farm team. Rooted in the principles espoused by agricultural visionaries like Joel Salatin and Wendell Berry, and most importantly, Thomas Jefferson, the Rosecrans are committed to producing healthy, sustainable food while preserving the land's integrity. Crossings Farm may arguably be one of the earliest adopters of regenerative farming in Davidson County. With the support of extended family and friends, they cultivate a diverse array of products, including honey, pork, and chicken, all raised naturally without chemicals, antibiotics, or hormones. Their motto, "Bringing family, farming, and community together," reflects not just a philosophy but a way of life deeply ingrained in the fabric of Crossings.

Jennifer’s family, the Myers family legacy stretches back to the early 1700s, when they arrived in North Carolina from York, Pennsylvania. Settling in the Holly Grove area, David Myers, one of the early descendants, ventured west and established what is now known as the Reeds Community. Today, "Crossings," stands as a testament to generations of dedication to sustainable farming practices. Here, pigs are bred and raised on-site, while chickens arrive as day-old chicks and are nurtured until they're ready for harvest. The Black Angus cows, carefully bred over 50 years by Jennifer’s grandfather, Weldon Myers, roam the pastures, ensuring that every animal raised on the farm embodies natural, ethical farming.

Crossings Farm began with wood lot pigs and pasture-raised chicken (meat and eggs). They have expanded their products to include lettuce, muscadines, cut flowers, dog treats (very healthy and delicious ones), and lard soap.

Crossings Farm farm store has an amazing selection of farm and artisan products selected for their quality from across North Carolina including Tidewater rice, Lutheridge Dairy and Hatteras Salt. Locals are extremely lucky to have this farm stand in this rural area.

Garden Window Farm

Introducing Ben Geiger, the dedicated owner of Garden Window Farm in Denton, NC. With a background in restaurants and retail management, Ben set out to fulfill his entrepreneurial aspirations. He embarked on his journey by launching a food truck that offered delectable dishes crafted from high-quality ingredients. However, the challenge of sourcing local produce prompted Ben to consider the possibility of growing his own.

In 2019, Ben and his wife, Bethany, extensively researched potential farm locations and ultimately chose North Carolina. They settled in Denton, where Ben immersed himself in the farming world, interning at two small farms to gain invaluable experience and knowledge. Inspired by the picturesque view of their fields from their home's windows and their cherished album by O'Brother, they affectionately named their farm Garden Window Farm.

Situated on three quarters of an acre, Garden Window Farm thrives with a diverse assortment of seasonal vegetables. From cauliflower and broccoli to sweet potatoes, herbs, mushrooms, and more, they cultivate a wide range of produce. The farm specializes in year-round lettuce production and has developed a profound understanding of Italian vegetable varieties, collaborating closely with an esteemed Italian chef to offer authentic, artisanal Italian cuisine.

At Garden Window Farm, the commitment to building healthy soils, fostering biodiversity, and minimizing synthetic chemicals is unwavering. Recognized as one of the few Certified Naturally Grown farms in Davidson County, they strictly adhere to guidelines that prohibit the use of synthetic chemicals and GMOs. The farm's growing practices prioritize sustainability for the soil, plants, and surrounding ecosystem.

Garden Window Farm is transitioning to a no-till growing method. This transformative approach aims to reduce soil erosion, enhance soil biological activity, and increase organic matter content. They are also adopting cover cropping techniques to naturally suppress soil diseases, pests, and weed growth. Additionally, the farm actively creates pollinator habitats, fostering biodiversity, and diligently works towards reducing single-use plastics to minimize environmental impact.

Ben's ongoing dedication to no till farming reflects his determination to minimize soil erosion, promote soil biological activity, and maximize soil organic matter. Through these practices, he aspires to cultivate the most nutrient-dense and flavorsome vegetables possible while reducing reliance on synthetic chemicals.

Seven Sisters Farm

Nestled on the outskirts of the Uwharrie Mountains in Southern Davidson County, Seven Sisters Farm stewards 25 acres with a prime view.  Little did the Fine Family know of the challenges the terrain and rocky soil of the Uwharrie Region would produce when it came to fulfilling their dream of running a small vegetable farm. Utilizing intensive growing techniques, protected culture and strategic landscape and water management, they have turned 6 acres into a highly productive year-round, market-style farm. Growing over 50 varieties of produce and serving regional farmer’s markets, an on-farm stand, and small local retailers and restaurants.

Our hands are in every management aspect of the farm, and Michael Fine has built and designed 100% of our infrastructure and landscape himself, often with salvaged materials. We are always experimenting with growing techniques, plant varieties, and marketing strategies to serve our customers as efficiently as possible. Permanent bed production, composting, increasing perennial crops, cover cropping, high tunnels and time intensive weed management techniques have improved the soil structure, fertility and growing conditions on our farm to help us continue to move away from pesticide and synthetic fertilizer usage. These techniques contribute to our overarching goal as a farm entity to “continue to improve our farmland while providing products viable to the well-being of our community."

We love food. We love growing food, talking to our customers how they use our food in their kitchen, and how they can grow their own! We believe locally grown food is a building block of community security and health, and often host educational tour groups with schools, homesteading groups, or aspiring small-farmers, usually over-loading them with the information 10 years or trail-by-error farming has provided us. Michael has also been offering consulting and building and design services to those looking to improve their small farm business, infrastructure or homestead landscape. 

Farming is a family affair for us. It is how we spend time with our children, teach them that your livelihood can enrich your life, and what work and dedication can produce; both monetarily and intrinsically. They are our right hands and you will often see them when you visit the farm-stand, either working alongside us or just being curious kids!

If you are wondering where to find us when we are not farming, we don’t get out much. So it is probably on the back half of our property checking on the pasture we are working on building-up to raise more animals, or watching the kids swim in the pond we are hoping one day to be able to share through on-farm events and farm-stays.
