Beginner vegetable gardening

As part of our mission to improve access to health and health equity, the Community Garden Workgroup is working on a pilot beginner vegetable gardening series in Davidson County. This program will be hosted by Davidson County Cooperative Extension and supported by Davidson County Local Food Network.

Davidson County is a diverse county with characteristics of both urban and rural health access issues. Building an equitable and healthy community takes a multi-faceted approach: 1) provide immediate access to healthy food, 2) improve access to quality health care and health education, 3) long term development of home and life skills such as gardening and cooking, 4) maintenance and improvement of soil health, water quality and air quality, are only some of the ways we can grow a sustainable, healthy community.

This beginner vegetable garden series takes into consideration the following:

  • Not everyone has a backyard or lives in a permanent housing situation. We will be introducing container gardening - providing participants wth containers, soil and vegetable transplants from which people can practice and learn to grow vegetables with minimal resources.

  • Beginner gardeners need continued support. From these workshops, we hope to build a community of support for beginner gardeners - sharing ideas and resources year-round much like a fitness workout group - to cheer and support each other to continue

  • Gardening is not just for the summer. We plan on offering season extension gardening workshops, showing simple ways to garden in the fall and winter in our area.

The first series will begin July 9 and continue once a week until the end of July. Registration is required.

If you are interested in becoming part of our Community Garden Workgroup, please email us and we will notify you of our next meeting.
